Bio

Sir Elton John is one of the most successful artists of all time, with over 300 million record sales. The singer, pianist and composer was born in 1947 and started collaborating with lyricist Bernie Taupin since 1967 and has had a successful career for the past six decades. Raised in London, John learned to play the piano at a very early age and formed the band Bluesology in 1962 at 15. Five years later, he chose a solo career and started writing music with Taupin for the following two years. His songwriting, in partnership with Taupin, is one of the most successful collaborations in history.

John’s most successful years were during the 70s when he released a collection of chart-topping albums in the US and the UK. During the 80s and 90s, he enjoyed further success with hit singles and albums and continued to record new music with his latest hit single, “Hold Me Closer,” a collaboration with Britney Spears that they released in 2022.

Sir Elton John has won five Grammy Awards, five Brit Awards, two Academy Awards, two Golden Globes, A Tony Award, a Disney Legend Award, a Laurence Olivier Award and the Kennedy Center Honor. In 1992 he was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame, and in 1994, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. In 1998, he received the honor of being knighted by Queen Elizabeth II for his contribution to music and charitable services. In 2020, he was appointed as a member of the Order of the Companions of Honour by King Charles III.

Elton John is known for his extremely successful music career and his work as a philanthropist. He established the Elton John AIDS Foundation in 1992, and the following year, he started hosting his annual AIDS Foundation Academy Awards Party, which is one of the biggest high-profile Oscar parties in Hollywood.

He may be best known for his hit single, “Candle in the Wind,” which was a tribute to Princess Diana that he rewrote in 1997 from his 1974 single. The single sold over 33 million copies worldwide and became the best-selling chart single of all time.
